Some tracks stronger than others, but no duds. #BookOfSouls is masterful, their best since 7th Son. Fans should be elated. It's a triumph.

The pacing of #BookOfSouls is one of its strengths. Short songs, epics, anthems, ballads. It's a double album that delivers exceptionally.

Summary: Some tracks stronger than others, but no duds. 'The Book of Souls' is masterful, their best since 7th Son. Fans should be elated. It's a triumph.

Track-by-track:

1: If Eternity Should Fail (Dickinson) 8:28 - Intended to be the title track for Bruce's next solo LP. Stately galloper, great chorus hook. It's a cute story, Bruce had it demoed, Harry heard it, & claimed it for Maiden. "But it was going to go on MY album."

2: Speed of Light (Smith/ Dickinson) 5:01 - GREAT Bruce/Adrian collab in the tradition of 2M2M & Icarus. Great energy, best lead single since Wicker Man.

3: The Great Unknown (Smith/ Harris) 6:37 - Heavier, more deliberately paced track by Smith & Harris. Somewhat rote but is saved by another solid hook.

4: The Red & the Black (Harris) 13:33 - Harry's best epic in 20 years, with a great sing-along melody that'll go over well live. WHOA-OH-OHOHOH!

5: When the River Runs Deep (Smith/ Harris) 5:52 - Terrific lead riff by Smith, another welcome, nicely timed speedster.

6: The Book of Souls (Gers/ Harris) 10:27 - Dark, majestic, explodes into a thrilling solo section similar to Powerslave/'Orra. Only Mayan. End disc 1.

7: Death or Glory (Smith/ Dickinson) 5:13 - 2nd great Smith/Dickinson track, Bruce's WWI tale moves at a nifty shuffle, nice change of pace.

8: Shadows of the Valley (Gers/ Harris) 7:32 - You can hear Gers' influence. Predictable but like The Talisman he comes through with a lively track.

9: Tears of a Clown (Smith/ Harris) 4:59 - HUGE surprise from Harry, he makes up for title with a song that continues his recent contemplative theme.

10: The Man of Sorrows (Murray/ Harris) 6:28 - Classic Murray intro, starts off as tepid ballad but turns into something more multifaceted. A grower.

11: Empire of the Clouds (Dickinson) 18:01 - 18-minute Bruce song about the R101 airship disaster, written on piano during the 6 weeks in studio. Bruce worried it wasn't Maiden, Harry said it's perfect. Band plays to piano, very unique for Maiden. Guitars add texture. Some of Nicko's finest drumming on record. Expressive, punctuating. Morse code "SOS" section is incredible, dramatic. Song builds & builds as R101 hits storm, crashes, kills 48. Exhilarating crescendo, mournful coda, not a minute wasted. Empire of the Clouds is a latter-day Maiden classic, an all-timer. No hyperbole, I've lived with this song for a month.
