Sve u svemu, veoma sam zadovoljan.

Finally! After not very satisfying full length "Sodom" and „The final sign of evil“, very controversial remake of cult record „In the sign of evil“, German wartank Sodom returns to form with the new release "In war and pieces" to remind us that they aren't considered one of the most consistent Thrash acts ever and part of German Big Three for nothing. This album was really carefully done to the detail and it seems to me that Sodom really had something to prove here; the first thing that will caught your eye when you face up „In war and pieces“ is beautifully done artwork (courtesy of Eliran Kantor) which shows Sodom’s mascot Knarrenheinz in war environment standard for the band, but the whole work is masterfully done and rightfully competes for one of the best Sodom cover arts ever. While we’re talking about the technical details one more thing is very good for sure and that is the production work of Waldemar Sorychta. Some of you perhaps know him for his work in Grip Inc but he is mostly familiar as producer for tons of great atmospheric metal bands such as Moonspell, Tiamat or Tristania, to name a few. I was a bit worried how will he handle Sodom’s sound but his Thrash roots shine through in all its glory as the album has just the right sound – heavy as hell, everything is comprehensable but not to the point of being overpolished and the guitars are simply ripping; the only comlaint could be pointed out to a bit clicky drum sound but that is just in nuances, final mark is truly good! Now we finally got to the point of actual music, the most important part after all... As I have said, Sodom did have a few missteps in the recent past but they have decided to get back on track obviously as "In war and pieces" manifests all the facets of Sodom's sound done in the way only they could. The album starts in always welcomed fast pace with title track which sets the tone for what's about to come in proper way and it is quickly followed by headbanging numbers such as "Hellfire" and "Nothing counts more than blood"; to be honest, I felt that speed was the part that largely missed on „Sodom“ and I guess that the guys agreed with me as they have provided here their standard hymns in that vein. As we go on, the album flows into more mid tempo waters but luckily those songs don’t drag that much, actually they are good enough not to drag the album down into the mud of boredom. I would prefer the bigger number of overall fast tracks as that’s where the Sodom reign supreme in my opinion and that would make the album even better, but that’s all about the personal preferences I guess... At the end of "In war and pieces" you will be treated with "Knarrenheinz“, thrashy punk Motorhead-alike track sung in German which is in tradition of Sodom classics like „Bombenhagel“ or „Stalinorgel“. So I guess that it is clear to you that „In war and pieces“ shows all the faces of Sodom and it is the album done by old dogs who still have enough fire under their assess to thrash for a long time coming. Welcome back to form, Sodom - you have been missed!
