SOULS 2006 cancelled:

na official sajtu pishe:

"The recognition of the Armenian Genocide has always been a first and foremost priority in the minds of System of A Down, so it's unfortunate for us to announce that Souls 2006 has been cancelled. Despite the cancellation, System will always continue to fight for this truly important cause, and encourages all of our friends and fans to help educate the world about a forgotten genocide and the importance of recognizing this atrocity. We thank you always for your undying support..."

Understanding Oil

By Serj Tankian

9/13/2001

The brutal attacks/bombings this week in New York, and Washington D.C., along with threats of attacks there and elsewhere in the country have changed our times forever. While the mass media concentrates on the details of the destruction, and the blanketed words of politicians, I will attempt to understand and explain the events from the fence. BOMBING AND BEING BOMBED ARE THE SAME THINGS ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE FENCE.

Terror is not a spontaneous human action without credence. People just dont hijack planes and commit harikari (suicide) without any weight of thought to the action. No one in the media seems to ask WHY DID THESE PEOPLE DO THIS HORRIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION?

To be able to understand the answer to this, we must first look at our U.S. Mideast Policy. During most of the 20th century, U.S. businesses have worked on attaining oil rights and concessions from countries in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. After WWI, secret back door deals by our State Dept. yielded oil rights from then defeated Turkey to fields in what is now Iraq and Saudi Arabia, in return for looking the other way at a crime against humanity, the Genocide of the Armenians by the Turks. Oil profits have been the motivating factors behind many attempts at counterinsurgency of democratic regimes by the CIA and the U.S in the Middle East (such as Iran in the 1950s, where the Shah replaced the Prime Minister who refused to give up oil rights to the U.S., and since the people couldnt deal with the Shah, an extremist government headed by the Ayatollah Khomeini ultimately prevailed). During the Iran-Iraq war, America supplied both sides with weapons and advice. These are not the actions of a rich superpower wanting peace. Lets not forget that Saddam Hussein, before being Americas vision of the Anti-Christ, was a close ally of the U.S., and the CIA. So what was the firm belief system of consecutive American administrations that caused all this to occur ? PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WILL LEAD TO HIGHER OIL AND GASOLINE PRICES. Lets not also forget the power of the Arms industry, disguised as defense, that still sells billions of dollars of weapons to the area. Therefore it has not been in the short-term economic interest of the U.S. to foster Peace in the Middle East. Using the above reasoning, the U.S. has encouraged extremist governments, toppled democracies, as in the case of Iran to replace it with a monarchy, rigged elections, and many more unspeakable political crimes for U.S. businesses abroad. Lets not also forget the Red Scare. During the war between the then Soviet Union and Afghanistan, the U.S. armed and supported the Taliban, a fundamentalist Muslim organization, and allowed them to export opium and heroin out of their country to pay for those weapons. Therefore the Taliban rose to power and control with the help of the U.S.A. Today, the bombing of Iraq still continues, no longer covered by the media, the economic embargo still remains, killing millions of children, and recently, while the world and the U.N. General Assembly have cried out to bring in peacekeeping forces into Israel and Palestine, to end the escalated war and recent assassinations, the U.S. has vetoed the rest of the Security Council and has halted the possibility of peace, there, in the most volatile place in the world.

People in Serbia, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, and Afghanistan to name a few have seen bombs fall, not always at military targets and kill innocent civilians, as the scene in New York city yesterday. The wars waged by our government in our names has landed smack in the middle of our living room. The half hour of destruction closed down all world financial markets, struck the central headquarters of our military, and had our leaders running into bunkers, and our citizens into fear and frenzy. What scares me more than what has occurred is what our reactions to the occurrences may cause. President Bush belongs to a long generation of Republican Presidents who love war economies. The media has only concentrated on the bombings, if you will, and what type of retaliations are looming for the perpetrators. What everyone fails to realize is that the bombings are a reaction to existing injustices around the world, generally unseen to most Americans. To react to a reaction would be to further sponsor the reaction. In other words, my belief is that the terror will multiply if concrete steps are not taken to sponsor peace in the middle east, NOW. This does not mean that we should not find the guilty party(s), Bin Laden, or whoever they may be, and not try them. Put simply, as long as a major injustice remains, violence precipitates to the surface of life.

Native American folklore, the Bible, Nostradamus, and many other major religious beliefs point to this era with the visuals of yesterdays disasters, and conditions of ecological disasters we experience daily in our lives today. War, rumors of war, famine, long burning fires, etc., are at our doorstep. We can prevail over this possible vision with the power of the human spirit, understanding, compassion, and peace. ITS TIME TO PUT OUR NEEDS FOR SECURITY AND SURVIVAL, ACHIEVED ONLY THROUGH PEACE, ABOVE AND BEYOND PROFITS, ESPECIALLY IN THESE TIMES.

SOLUTION:

The U.S. should stop sidestepping the U.N. Security Council, and allow U.N. Peacekeeping troops and missions to the Middle East. Stop the violence first.

Stop the bombing and patrol of Iraq.

With todays gains in the use of alternative fuels, develop them to full usage with autos and other utilities, to make the country less dependant on an already depleting natural reserve, oil.

By initiating peace, we would have already shaken the foundations of support for Bin Laden, and/or all those that sponsor activities like those we saw yesterday, and break the stronghold of extremists on the world of Islam. On the other hand, if we carry out bombings on Afghanistan or elsewhere to appease public demand, and very likely kill innocent civilians along the way, wed be creating many more martyrs going to their deaths in retaliation against the retaliation. As shown from yesterdays events, you cannot stop a person whos ready to die.

Ne, nije taj intervju, nego ovaj...

Uopste nije poenta sta on misli o situaciji kod nas.

Evo intervju...

SERJ TANKIAN of SYSTEM OF A DOWN

SYSTEM OF A DOWN just shouldn't be happening. They are too political. They are too aggressive. They are too avant garde and they are just too damned intelligent. They have a quirkiness about them that can, all too easily, catch the listener off guard. With this ability comes a responsibility not to abuse their communicative powers and this is a

responsibility that the group, individually and collectively, takes very seriously. To be certain, SOAD does have a message but rather than cram that message down the collective listening and viewing public's gullet SOAD chooses to rely on their faith in the audiences intelligence. "People don't give kids enough credit for their knowledge" says vocalist, Serj Tankian, and who can argue with that? It was the kids who managed to discover SOAD despite a shamefully absent media campaign and it was the kids who showed up in the dozens at a day of show in-store appearance that nobody thought to advertise! Something is happening here and the heavy metal community had better take notice before it is completely overrun by intelligent, individually thinking kids who won't stand for an artist to prance on stage and tell bullshit stories only to insert thename of the local town for variety. The kids are definitely in tune with what this band is doing and the message is spreading, rapidly. In each successive tour through the highways and byways of America every stop has seen more and more kids dancing, spinning or just listening to SOAD. With successful support slots for SLAYER, FEAR FACTORY and two successive OZZ-FEST appearances SOAD may just about be done paying any dues that are required for headline status. The term "Heavy Mental" was coined a few years ago to describe bandsthat combine intelligent lyrics and distorted guitars and nowhere will you find a better example of this combination than with SOAD. Though I couldn't get the record company's publicist to send me as much as a photo, I did manage to speak with the group after their most recent stop in Detroit. Sauntering up to the bus and asking them if they wanted to rap, they said, "Sure." Complete humility and devoid of any pretension, now, that is something different!

DAVID LEE One of the things that I have found very attractive about your band is that, besides being very moving music, the lyrics are very intelligent and even profound. As I sat watching the show tonight I couldn't help but wonder if a lot of the message that is in the music doesn't just sail straight over the audiences head?

SERJ TANKIAN We are like a piece of pie, some people like it because of the cherries inside, some people like the crust, others just like sweet things. When you put out a message or when you put out a piece of art you put it on the wall and if it is abstract, for example, you can't expect for them to know that it is a donkey. People will make what they want out of it and as long as they internalize it, wether it be the messages or the music, I consider it productive.

DL When kids approach you and it is obvious that they have grasped onto a piece of the message do you find that it was the same message that you intended to send?

ST Oh, yeah. There have been countless shows where I have met with kids and they just come up and start talking to me about stuff and it is very enlightening. I have learned a lot from these kids and I have seen that there are a lot of smart kids out there. People don't give kids enough credit for their knowledge or as to their knowledge of the truth.

DL Do you think that is something that kids lose over time? Do they all get more cynical as they grow older?

ST Yeah. Once the brain starts to take over, they are in trouble. Once the brain starts taking over and we have this "adult progress thing" people do become more cynical, they lose the memory of the truth. The other day I was listening to some music and it had children's voices in it and these children's voices gave me a feeling of euphoria and I though, "Why am I feeling this way?" And when I though back, I thought "When I was a kid I didn't think the same way or I didn't think at all, I just felt and it was beautiful." The feelings and excitements of being a child, you just can't experience them as an adult. I think there is a way of sorta experiencing that again but you have to start de-programming yourself in a certain way.

DL You have to un-learn?

ST Yeah, un-learn your way to the truth.(laughs)

DL There is certainly a visual element to the band but the focus is most obviously on the music and lyrics themselves was that a conscious decision to emphasis those aspects of the rock and roll show or did it just kind of evolve into what it is?

ST I don't think that we really intend to do anything. Everything that we do is just what we do and it is how we do things. We don't have any motives or intentions, other than doing something that we really enjoy without compromising and we do that and are making a living out of it so we are happy. Spreading the message is important and we are doing that

as well but, like you said, not everybody gets it. Some people do and if five people got it today that is five people more than yesterday.

DL You give great emphasis to telling the listener about your Armenian heritage in particular the relationship with the Turks. . .

ST The genocide.

DL The genocide. Is that a message that a lot of people have seemed to grasp? I mean, because of that genocidal act of the Turks there are very few Armenians who could have a personal connection to the whole thing.

ST I have met a lot of people who have, through our music, learned about it and have come to me to ask me more about it. I have turned them onto some Internet sights or whatever so, yeah, we do get people that understand it. On the album as well, the last song is a dedication.

DL So, these are kids who are not of Armenian descent?

ST No, generally not because Armenian people know their own history anyway.

DL Did you come into a understanding of your history on your own or was that something that was taught to you by your family?

ST My Grandfather had told me stories about how he was able to escape and how his whole family was killed so we were told the story from a very young age, all of us. So, it is the truth to us and so it is nothing that we had to learn but it is something that we intend to teach.

DL The parallel to what is going on in Kosovo is to obvious for me not to ask your feelings on that situation.

ST Serbia is definitely very aggressive in their dealings with the Muslim ethnicities within Yugoslavia wether it be Kosovo or Albania or Bosnia. They definitely are the aggressors and Milosovitch has come to power with that hatred and fascism. That is how he came to power, with promises of fascism and although we are fighting against that, I am not so against this conflict, as far as what NATO is doing as much as why they are doing it. Why don't we help Tibet, for example? Because we are working with the Chinese now? We don't need Tibet financially. Why aren't we bombing China? Why are we not bombing other countries that are doing the same thing like Yugoslavia is doing? I am not saying that Yugoslavia is right in what they are doing, at all, but why are we choosing that one? Why would we risk our allied status with Russia and with China? It is getting scary for the human population in the world right now because of it. So, why are we doing that? The real reason is money, again. The fact that Kosovo has ben applying to the West for investments, it is a lucrative operation to split up those nations over there so that they will be dependant on the U.S. It is a political game and a financial game more than anything. Sure, let's go to war over this but why not Tibet and why not other places?

DL Are there just wars?

ST Self defense is a just war. I think that is the only just war. If someone is attacking your country and trying to take over your sovereignty, then, I think, that is a just war. If you were walking down the street, just as a person, and someone tries to attack you and harm you and you are defending yourself, your fighting against that person is just. I don't see anything else as just. The only questionable line to be drawn is when a country comes to us and asks us for help, the question should be, Why are we doing this? Generally, I would say that there are no just wars because war is not a just thing. To harm someone is not going to help you either way but self defense is the only ground that I see.

DL So there is no divinity in passivity?

ST Divinity is definitely having nothing to do with war. If you believe in divinity of any kind, wether it is the Bible or the Buddha or whatever you believe in, the divinity that exists between us and within us has nothing to do with war.

DL Why do you choose to express such a peaceful message through such an aggressive form of music?

ST It comes through our musical influences. Daron writes most of the music, Shavo writes some music, I write some music but it is a combination of musical influences. Daron and John, for example, are huge metal heads where as I was into metal and punk and then rap more later in my life and I was more into cultural and folk music and other stuff so, it is just a combination of a lot of influences. It just melts into what it is, why? I don't know!

DL The thing that I like most about the band is that there is not pretension to any of it, it feels genuine.

ST No pretension at all and no intent behind it. We didn't do it to make money that is for sure!(laughs) People would come up to us and say "You shouldn't growl or else you will never get signed." and all that other shit. We definitely didn't do it to be liked by everybody else.

DL Was there anything about the recording of this album that was particularly hard for you to do, given the obvious emotional connection to the whole thing?

ST Dealing with the guitar player!(laughs) We had a good time doing the album. This band really enjoys recording as well as playing. One thing that I did that almost made me faint was trying to sing upside down! (laughs) They had me strapped by my ankles to some of the exercise equipment at Rick (Rubin's) house and as soon as I tried to growl I passed out!

DL I have been a fan of almost everything that Rick Rubin has ever done, how was it that you began your involvement with him?

ST He came and saw us at a show in Hollywood at The Viper Room and from the first time that he heard us, he was into us and wanted to sign us and record us. We were very surprised and very happy that he was there. We have respected his work from the BEASTIE BOYS to THE CHILI PEPPERS to SLAYER, of course. Rick is totally into the music and he has signed bands that can be profitable but he hasn't produced them himself and when he decides to produce something he is really into it personally. He is very in touch with the music.

DL You have graduated to the main stage for this years Ozz-Fest, how did you manage that?

ST I think that it has a lot to do with Sharon Osbourne and what she thinks. I think that we are very lucky that we have the ability to do that.

DL Other than the obvious, what else should people take away from the SOAD experience?

DARON MALAKIAN Musically they should open their minds to different kinds of music and they should go look for different kinds of music. They should look for art and for things to inspire, anything that inspires you, go after it.
