azal
Quiet Room - Introspect (Dominion) 1997 1. "Different Scene" (4:44) 2. "Grudge" (5:02) 3. "Second Time Around" (6:23) 4. "Altered Past" (4:46) 5. "Drowning" (5:29) 6. "Laughing At Your Expense" (3:53) 7. "Holding On" (4:31) 8. "Extramental" [instrumental] (3:22) 9. "Suspended Seconds" (2:32) 10. "Undetermined" (4:44) Majestic progressive metal that is very similar in style to mid-90's Fates Warning. Vocalist Chad Caster has the perfect voice for this type of metal. The music is technical, but not overly so, as some prog-metal bands tend to do. The Quiet Room put equal attention to melody and memorable hooks. This album was re-released on Metal Blade in 1999, but has been out since 1997. http://www.sendspace.com/file/fywnrs Edited September 14, 2008 by azal

azal
TRACK LISTING 1. "Not With Me" - 3:37 2. "God's Funeral" - 8:10 3. "Nothing" - 9:32 4. "Think" - 4:05 5. "Stop" - 6:12 6. "Be Mine" - 5:09 7. "Amok" - 4:29 8. "Free Minded" - 6:03 9. "Detect : Myself" - 7:24 10. "This Promise" - 5:04 1998 Modern Music Records Some time ago, there was a lot of talk about this German metal band on the Dream Theater listserv, Ytsejam. And with good reason: their first CD release, Behind, showed a heavy Dream Theater influence. Much of that influence remains on this, Superior's sophomore effort, but it's tempered with a good deal of experimentation. For the most part, Superior's compositions sound like some of the heavier material from Falling Into Infinity, although "Nothing" wouldn't have sounded out of place at all on Awake. There's a lot of crunch, not at all much gratuitous soloing, and some risk-taking. What makes this album worthy of investigation by prog metal fans is its willingness to mess around with various different sounds. There are some pretty cool keyboard patches put to use in "Stop" and "Amok"; "Free Minded" bounces from its Eastern-sounding intro to a deep-fried funk workout; "Detect: Myself" adds in some horns and a couple jazzy piano interludes (and is probably my favorite song on the album). Another plus for the band is that their singer, although singing in accented English instead of his native language (grr), is powerful but controlled, and never feels the need screech or go out of his range. Younique has a couple duff tracks, namely the two ballads, but otherwise is a pretty solid album. Something about it - maybe the vocalist's accent or style; maybe the song lengths, which I feel are a bit overextended and sometimes disjointed; maybe the Dream Theater influence, which is still pretty apparent - keeps me from really enjoying it the way a lot of prog metal fans seem to, but it's impossible not to recognize the talent here. http://www.sendspace.com/file/eq4xny Edited September 15, 2008 by azal

Jovan Cvijic
Thanx for bringing up the cults. Dersu Uzala
A mozda i barabar. Nazalost, cekajuci novi album evo vec 5 godina 'obradovase' me vescu o raspadu. Bem ti zivot, a one kojekakve nekreativne budale delju li delju. Tipa, Finci. azal
Track Listing 1. Fall From Grace 2:06 2. No Direction Home 7:04 3. Heretic Beholder 5:04 4. Scar 4:25 5. Bleed Mask Bleed 4:37 6. The Last Days Of The Year 4:31 7. From Dusk Till Dawn 5:37 8. To Be Or Not To Be (God) 7:14 9. El Niño 5:35 Ah, the almost forgetten and certainly neglected Italian progressive/power metal act Eldritch...for some reason, they don't seem to get mentioned too much these days, but they certainly have made an impact on the scene and released some solid albums over the last decade. El Nino is their third release, originally released in 1998 but out of print for a while. The music of Eldritch was always (and even more so these days) heavier than most prog-metal groups, and more of a melodic thrash style with soaring vocals and plenty of keyboards. El Nino was the album that really opened the doors for them, and is pretty solid from top to bottom. The first thing you notice here is the absolutely shredding & bone crunching guitar playing of chief songwriter Eugene Simone. This guy can really rip on the guitar, as evident on crushers like "Bleed Mask Bleed", "No Direction Home", "From Dusk Till Dawn", and "To Be or Not to Be (God)". He certainly packs a metal punch throughout this CD, occasionally giving way to keyboard player Oleg Smirnoff for a speedy solo. When the two decide to trade off a bit, that's when the Dream Theater comparisons come into play a bit, but for the most part the style here is melodic and at times atmospheric thrash metal. Lead singer Terence Holler has a strong voice, perfectly suited for this style of music, and although you can detect a slight accent from time to time, even a few off-key moments as well, for the most part he puts in a very solid performance here. Catchy melodies, powerful vocals, beefy guitar riffs, virtuoso guitar solos, lots of keyboards, and tight rhythm work, that's the formula here, and it works. http://www.sendspace.com/file/t389fp

azal
ovo je jedan od retkih albuma iz ove price koji ne zvuci "dated" danas. naravno, progeri tipcni ga nisu voleli kad je izasao jer progresivci uglavnom ne vole progresivnu muziku meni zvuci kao da ljudi slusaju sve i svasta i sklopili prilicno zabavan album, cuje se Faith No More, Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack, Days of the New, Promised Land stil Queensryche-a, svasta. mnogo pametni i subtilno kompleksni aranzmani, bubanj, gitara i bas bas cesto sviraju potpuno drugacije feelove ali sve se uklopi na kraju. elektronika isto mnogo suptilna i iskusno odradjena. a tek solaze. Solaze su mozda i Highlight....narocito u Faces i Blind. evo jedna mnogo zbunjena recenzija. Event's latest Human Condition is a very digital, industrial sounding affair. Not to suggest they all sound like they're playing synths, but each instrument, including Dave DeLugo's vocals, seem to be electronically enhanced - that, metallic special effects added - this most apparent on "Faces" which sounds highly digitized. What this gives the album is a rather cold and harsh feel - smooth metal surfaces, dry air... it all seems so impersonal, clinical. On the one hand, it provides that distance on which the band can comment on the Human Condition, on the other it makes the album one hard to enjoy just on a sonic level. I find I want a little warmth in there. I'd put it all down to my stereo, but I've played it on three different ones in the past week or so, including the high-end stereo...it's a little too metallic and dry for my tastes. And yet, not enough Metal. Event made me think of a synthesis of Vanden Plas, Angel Dust, Queensryche, and Soundgarden. Mostly I find myself thinking of recent Queensryche, from about Hear In The Now Frontier through their recent Q2K. In fact, this was the kind of sound I was expecting for Q2K, but don't they achieved it. Each time I listened Human Condition I couldn't get out of my head a song that I had previously downloaded from the internet by a band called Blank. The song called "Perfect Illusion," which I reviewed in my December 1999 editorial and felt must really be called "Impending Desire." However, that band was not called Blank, as I've recently discovered (in prepping this review) that it is actually Event (from Electric Skies (1999)). "Human Condition," oddly, had me thinking of Dave Matthews Band at times...nothing very specific, just a certain cadence of DeLugo's voice and a way of his delivery. I read someone's comment somewhere that they felt that Event were trying too hard to be Pain of Salvation. I don't quite hear that myself, except that like POS, this is message-metal. Anyway, aside from the "metallic" sound of the album, I quite like the performances here. DeLugo has a good voice, very much like Geoff Tate's but not quite at clone level. Drums are used throughout, but lack a certain punch. Matt Scurfield uses enough of the kit to prove his a competent drummer - he does get the focus at times, playing a funky beat to open the album and again during "Insensitive." Shaun Michaud's guitar solos often make me think of Queen's Brian May, circa 1980 (i.e. The Game, for example). When he solos, his guitar suddenly bursts up out of the mix. I think there are some great arrangements here, some very thoughtful and thought provoking lyrics, but it doesn't quite feel as if they live up to their potential. For all the power inherent in the music - the percussion is driving when it does get to separate from the mix, the beefy solos, the impassioned vocals - it seems as if they pulled themselves back a bit. I find I want them to really let loose, to play with a lot more aggro. So, while I like it, I don't love it. Jovan Cvijic
Zanimljiv prog ala rani kvinsrajh. Takođe, podsetih se nenadmašnog SECRECY - Art in Motion.
