Márta Sebestyén has long been known in her native land as the greatest interpreter of Hungarian folk music and she is now one of the world's favourite traditional singers. She has toured with the Hungarian groups Muzsikás and Vujicsics all over Europe the US and Asia and has recorded with tradition/fusion groups Deep Forest and Towering Inferno.

 

Márta Sebestyén was brought up surrounded by music from Hungary and all over the world. Her mother studied with Zoltan Kodaly and taught music in Hungary as well as travelling to the countryside to collect songs in villages. Over the years, Márta has continued to learn songs from other cultures, even as she has devoted her life to Hungarian traditional music.

 

The songs in the album Kismet have been learned from people and sources who have been close to Márta and are part of the treasured collection of melodies she keeps close to her heart and which represent so much of her life's destiny - like a kismet worn around a Turkish girl's neck underneath her blouse. Márta has now travelled all over the world and speaks many languages, but it is still the melodies she hears that she remembers most vividly. This is a collection of some of her favourites. The fact that most are not Hungarian has created for her the freedom to sing them to Nikola Parov's unique arrangements which are not strictly traditional, but use a mixture of traditional and modern instruments.

 

The album The Rooster Is Crowing is a memento for the archaic Northern Transylvanian (Maramureş) Jewish community, destroyed by the Nazi in 1944. Their music has survived due to the Gipsy musicians playing to them in their feast. Márta and the Muzsikás have collected these melodies in the '80s from these old musicians, and two of them actually plays them in this CD in the same way they had done it fifty years before.

 

The albums Homeward Bound and Morning Star, presenting Hungarian traditional music, were the first successful registrations of Márta outside of Hungary.

The album 'BAHAR' (LM020) by Makis Ablianitis was released in December 2000 and it immediately became a great success. Ablianitis was invited at the 'Ethnic & Jazz Festival' ( Athens ) in the spring of 2001 to perform 'BAHAR'. And therefore, the opportunity for Ablianitis' group to be formed was presented. 'BAHAR' crossed the borders and became known worldwide. The French company 'George V Records' included the piece "Love Secret" in the collection of "BUDDHA BAR" for the 40 th anniversary of Amnesty International. Three more record companies ( Stereo Deluxe, Kriztal, 4 Fun Music) have asked for pieces from 'BAHAR' to be included in their collections. Ablianitis' group appeared in Constantinople in the spring of 2002 and in the summer of the same year it participated in the festival of Ohride and a month later at the "New Age & World Music Festival" at Skopje . The following spring the group performed for the second time for the audience of Constantinople that had supported "BAHAR" so fanatically.

 

After all these live performances there was a new inspiration in the music of "BAHAR". The direct communication with the audience, the chemistry among the members of the group but also the musicians' improvisational mood has created a new, completely different and very interesting version of 'BAHAR'. Yet, it's not just about the already known pieces. Ablianitis has written new pieces especially for his concerts, and has rearranged the pieces of other musicians (Imaginary Traveller/ Brian Keane). Therefore, the material of the live recordings of 'BAHAR' is now completely different from that of the original record.

The Moon and the Nightspirit was formed in 2003 by Agnes and Mihaly. It is a mystical journey into the amaranthine realm of dreams and beauty, long-forgotten by modern man. A journey inspired by pagan fables, ancient Hungarian folk music and nature itself.

 

The band recorded a promotional EP in 2004, which earned them a deal with for the release of their first album, "Of Dreams Forgotten and Fables Untold", recorded and released on the following year. This album was very well received and made a name for The Moon and the Nightspirit in the musical scene. They played several festivals/concerts, both in Hungary and abroad, and even at a live TV show on one of Hungarian National television's programmes dedicated to folk/world music.

 

Recordings for their second album, "Regõ Rejtem", began around mid 2006, again at the band's own studio, Elysion. "Regõ rejtem" is a line from ancient Hungarian minstrel songs, which means "I conjure with magic", or, in words even closer to Shamanism, "révüléssel révülök" ("I am ecstatic in a trance"), a vision that suits perfectly the mood on the duo's songs. This time they have traveled further into times bygone, rekindling the flames of the Taltos (Hungarian shaman) and reawakening the spirits of the Elders. The music has acquired a more varied and colorful tone through the use of varied ethnic instrumentation (such as kaval, tapan, jew's harp or zither), and has also become significantly more energetic and vibrant, without sacrificing the unique ambiance that the band had found on their debut album.

Paaaaaaa... Hmmmm... Vidis, ja u zadnje vreme slusam jako mnogo muzike za kaval, pa sam shodno tome i navucen na makedonsku muziku. Jos odavno mnogo volim makedonsku grupu Anastasia, ali poslednjih dana se radim njihovom muzikom jako mnogo. To nije klasicni folk, ima tu i dark zvuka, vizantinskog crkvenog pevanja... svega i svacega, ali zvuci jaaako mracno. Posebno preporucujem album "Melourgia", po mom misljenju remek-delo, kaval tu zvuci apsolutno predivno...

Talvi, kao i obično – pun pogodak! Čitala sam ranije da je Jonne pre osnivanja Korpiklaanija svirao u ovom bendu. Sjajna je muzika, nisam ovo očekivala, baš sam prijatno iznenadjena. Pesma Lady in Black – zanimljiva. =) Hvala!!

Lutz Kirchhof, nemacki lautista i njegov album "Lute Music For Witches And Alchemists". Covek izvodi na lauti dela srednjovekovnih kompozitora i to zvuci totalno vanvremenski, mogao sam da ovo postavim i na temu o klasicnoj muzici ali mi se cini da ce folkeri ponajvise uzivati u ovome. Apsolutno predivno.
