It took one band, six cameras, five hundred fans and master producer Casey Bates

(Chiodos, Foxy Shazam, Fear Before The March of Flames) to capture one of the

most historic live performances of The Number Twelve Looks Like You?s career.

 

Shot on location at a sold-out School of Rock show on December 15th, 2007 in

South Hackensack, New Jersey, Here At The End of All Things captures the chaotic

and adrenaline infused live show that has made The Number Twelve Looks Like You

so important to their fans, and to heavy music in general. The final show of a

75 day tour, the band tore through their eclectic set as though it were the last

day on earth and the worst fate the universe could imagine was lingering outside

the sold out venue doors. Fans have been debating the genesis of the strange

extraterrestrial themes and quixotic radio broadcasts featured at the show and

how they would be incorporated into the final DVD. When asked for some insight,

Jase Korman lead singer for the band simply said, "We've been touring endlessly

for years, but we still haven't played for everyone, so this DVD is a great way

to reach every man, woman, and child in the United States of America. If you are

a fan of 1996's Independence Day starring Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, you

will fall in love with Here At the End of All Things."

KTU is a progressive/experimental musical supergroup. In 2004 Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto started collaborating with Kimmo Pohjonen and Samuli Kosminen, forming KTU out of their respective duos TU and Kluster. Trey Gunn (from King Crimson and duo TU) join forces for the double duo formation KTU (pronounced K2).

 

 

"KTU, the world's most psychedelic power trio!...KTU comes on like a hybrid of Cream and latter day King Crimson, led by a Siberian mushroom shaman" (Jussi Niemi, Aamulehti).

 

"Sometimes warrior sometimes mystical, between fire and ice, in an unending horse-ride through the planes of northern Europe. Convulsive, ghostly music, capable of releasing gargula from its concrete skin - scaring, slow waltzes, improvised gothic jazz, rehearsed muscular funk, and overwhelming improvisations".

 

Kimmo and Samuli formed Kluster in 2001 featuring accordion dynamo Kimmo and sampling guru Samuli . Both award-winning musicians are known as adventurers in their respective fields and their partnership takes accordion music to new and unexplored territory. On stage, Kosminen reproduces samples of Pohjonen's accordion and voice percussively by way of electronic drum pads. Samuli also drums with Icelandic band MUM, and other recent Kluster collaborations include Uniko and Kronos Quartet.

 

Percussionist Pat Mastelotto and touch guitarist Trey Gunn have enjoyed successful careers with the band King Crimson, one of the worlds most dynamic, skillful and innovative bands. The two met at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios before touring with David Sylvian & Robert Fripp and separately they have worked with John Paul Jones, XTC, Toni Childs, The Rembrandts, Cock Robin, Robyn Hitchcock, Trail of the Dead, Julia Fordham, Vernon Reid, Hall & Oats, The Sugercubes, Mathew Sweet, Jude Cole, Steve Hackett and countless others. Their new duo known as TU explores and highlights the well-known Gunn and Mastelotto edge, energy, humor, imagination, phenomenal playing skills and dynamism in an improvisational setting. The first TU album was released in early 2004 followed by April appearances in Moscow.

 

Seeds for KTU took root at SXSW in Austin Texas in March 1999 when Kimmo Pohjonen shared a billing with Mastelotto/Gunn/Robert Fripp's Project Three at the Electric Lounge. Plans for the quartet took shape over the next five years. KTU's aim is to combine the creative energies, edge, imagination and other elements of the four players to make something new, different and musically explosive. Surround sound design and effects by Heikki Iso-Ahola.

 

KTU rehearsals and the World Premiere concert took place in Helsinki at the venue Nosturi in April 2004, followed by four concerts in Tokyo at Eggman, recordings of these shows are featured on the debut record "Eight Armed Monkey" released in 2005. Live concerts continued in 2005 with headlining festival appearances in Germany at the Moers festival, Kulturzelt an der Drahtbracke Kassel, Kulturarena in Jena, as well as FMM festival in Sines, Portugal. More recent shows include Moscow, Tallinn, Estonia and the Tampere Jazz Happening festival in Finland. In 2007 KTU debuted its live show in the US and Mexico as a trio (missing Kosminen).

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles (2008)

 

Along with the rising profiles of both Scottish producer Rustie and fellow Warp artist Harmonic 313, FlyLo's migration to the Sheffield label for his first full-length release indicates that this strain of instrumental, broken hip hop is whetting aural appetites. Steven Ellison's hometown provides the impetus for a narrative of city life where off-kilter beats, cloaked in ambience, set the soundscape. His is an L.A that threatens; the ominous, static fog of opener Brainfeeder seduces, while Roberta Flack is just sublime.

 

Where David Holmes' Bow Down To The Exit Sign packed a visceral, urban punch through spoken monologues from corner street dwellers, Ellison's eschewing of M.Cs smacks of confidence. Without lyrical clutter the imagined city is as much the listener's creation as the artist's, a trick that perhaps betrays Ellison's jazz lineage (his aunt is Alice Coltrane).

 

Prefuse 73's shadow looms large over the wonderfully-monikered Beginners Falafel and the crunchy edits of Camel. That aside, Ellison's deftness of touch, matched with the application of ethereal backdrops that recall EL P's stone cold work with Cannibal Ox, ensure this street storyboard intensifies with each listen. The rabbit-warren, rhythmic freefall of Riot, for example, baits the listener to grapple with its organised chaos.

 

Tilts of the cap to mainstream hip hop come with a weighty and satisfying abstraction. Melt lifts the drum pattern from Ludacris' Stand Up, treating it to an echo-chamber rework, while the forward-leaning GNG BNG rolls off the back of eighties drum pads before touching hyphy, bollywood and finally a Shadow-esque drum break.

 

Underpinned by a woozily plucked double bass and a heavenly female vocal, penultimate track Testament echoes most Ellison's sound on 2006's Reset E.P. The analogue bubble bath of swansong Auntie's Lock is a final, brazen challenge to resist this record's charms.
