ATHEIST: Prague Date Announced

Seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST have lined up a headlining show in Prague, Czech Republic on August 3. The group's itinerary is now shaping up as follows:

Jul. 14-15 - Bloodstock Open Air at Catton Hall, Walton On Trent - Derbyshire, UK

Jul. 16-17 - Evolution Festival - Brescia, ITA

Aug. 03 - Black Pes Music Bar - Prague, CZR

Aug. 3-5 - Wacken Open Air - Wacken, GER

Aug. 23-26 - Hole - The Sky Festival - Bergen, NOR

ATHEIST guitarist/vocalist Kelly Shaefer has reassembled what is widely considered the band's classic recording lineup (Shaefer, guitarist Rand Burkey, bassist Tony Choy, and drummer Steven Flynn) for several exclusive festival performances, including Italy's Evolution Festival and Germany's Wacken Open Air.

ATHEIST has recently had its wildly-influential catalog (1988's "Piece of Time", 1993's "Elements", and the 1991's legendary "Unquestionable Presence") reissued internationally via Relapse Records. Additionally, "Unquestionable Presence" was recently featured in Decibel magazine as part of its ongoing Hall of Fame feature. The Hall of Fame feature highlights influential and pivotal releases in metal history, and "Unquestionable Presence" joins of ranks of previously profiled classics such as SLAYER's "Reign In Blood", SEPULTURA's "Roots", and AT THE GATES' "Slaughter of the Soul", among others.

ATHEIST drummer Steve Flynn has posted the following message on the band's official web site:

"This Saturday will mark the start of another round of marathon practice sessions in preparation for the first ATHEIST show coming up in England. Of course, this means like four trips to the airport... Poor me... Maybe I should open up a limo/taxi service... I live 45 miles from the airport and 33 miles from our rehearsal studio... For four days all I'll be doing is driving and playing drums.

"We'll be practicing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The songs we'll be playing in order (though not our actual set-list order):

01. On They Slay

02. Unholy War

03. Piece of Time

04. Unquestionable Presence

05. Retribution

06. Mother Man

07. An Incarnation's Dream

08. And the Psychic Saw

09. I Deny

10. Mineral

11. Air

12. Fire

"Tony [Choy, bass] and I will hopefully construct a bass/drum solo type thingy as well. We'll also get together a few more times before the first show in England... We may try to do a 'secret' show here in Atlanta just as a warm-up/preparation for the Euro shows... IF time and circumstance allow that is.

"I'm sure my bandmates will be adding their thoughts here as well.... Of course, all they do is either sing or play guitar... I'm the only one doing any actual physical work!!"

Seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST kicked off their summer European tour run July 14 at England's Bloodstock FEstival and July 16 at Italy's Evolution Festival. The band's first live appearances in over 13 years were greeted with rabid enthusiasm as the group blazed through classics like "Unquestionable Presence", and "Piece of Time".

ATHEIST's luggage and guitars had been lost en route to Europe, so the band had to, in usual ATHEIST fare, overcome the obstacles, and the show went on with rented guitars. ATHEIST then proceeded to bring down the stage at Italy's Evolution Festival... literally! The stage collapsed in a horrific moment in the middle of "Unholy War" and bassist Tony Choy fell through an unsecured part of the large outdoor stage. Fortunately, his face was saved by his bass which was what the six-foot plank inevitably hit, in the process breaking all the strings on Tony's bass along with the neck. The large crowd of Italian metal fans went absolutely ballistic when Choy was pulled from the rubble and emerged minutes later with a borrowed bass from one of the other bands, and ATHEIST ripped into the classic "Mother Man". Frontman Kelly Shaefer says, "I looked over and he was just gone. It was a bad fall and i thought for sure he was gonna have a broken leg or something. We are very lucky to not have lost him for the summer. He did sprain his arm, but he should be healed up for Wacken. What is it with us and bass players, you know?"

The shows were classic, to say the least, and they will likely be even more eventful as ATHEIST prepare to hit the stage at the Wacken Open Air festival on August 5.

"It was an amazing, incredible experience for ATHEIST," says Shaefer. "The amount of technical-loving metalheads has grown tenfold since we last played on stage in 1993. People came from all over Europe, Mexico, Canada, and Russia to see us play. That is very humbling. So many new faces as well that are just discovering the records for the first time. We thank everyone for such a warm response. See you at Wacken, and Hole in the Sky in Norway!"
